Disk Imaging
I've been working on a disk imaging utility or two lately. As they aren't finished yet they are just going by "DIMG" (for Disk IMaGer). The first one runs on Windows XP/2003/Vista/7 and Linux:
It is currently limited to 1.44MB PC-formatted 3.5" floppy disks but this will change at some point in the future along with support for additional filesystems.
There is also a very simple utility for older versions of Windows (where floppy drives are more common). See the DIMG for Windows page for more information.
Releases
For all available releases, see http://ftp2.zx.net.nz/pub/DGS/dimg/readme.html. The current version is 1.2.1 which was released on the 12th of June 2011 and adds long filename support, improves stability, fixes a lot of bugs and tidies up the user interface. Win32 Binaries as well as source code are available.
Current Limitations
- There is currently no ability to retry in the event of a read or write failure (this will probably appear in v1.3)
- Geometry handling under windows is very basic (that is, non-existant). It relies on windows to detect the geometry of the disk and it will not try to set the geometry when writing to it. This means that you can't write a 1.4MB disk image to a 720K disk or a 720K disk image to a 1.4MB disk - you have to reformat the target disk to match the disk image.
- The program has not yet been tested on anything other than 1.4MB disks. It is expected that low density and 5.25" disks should be supported under linux. It is entirely unknown if they will work at all under windows.
